Green building sites, three squares to give back to neighborhoods

In Rome, three green areas between Quarticciolo and Centocelle will be redeveloped with participatory projects: new social spaces, games, greenery and accessible paths

To restore meaning and usefulness to spaces that have remained on the margins, transforming them into places for meeting, play and daily life. This is the goal of the three green yards presented by Rome’s Municipality V, which will affect largo Mola di Bari in Quarticciolo, via Gioia del Colle and via Castore Durante in Centocelle. A package of interventions worth a total of 1.5 million euros, with work scheduled to begin by the summer, the result of a participatory process that involved residents, neighborhood committees and associative realities.

Quarticciolo, a square that changes its face

In largo Mola di Bari, the project completely redesigns the layout of the space. The play area will be moved in front of the church, while the current play area will be transformed into a multipurpose square. The choice responds to the need to make today’s less frequented corners more lively and, at the same time, to create a space capable of hosting moments of widespread sociality, small events and neighborhood initiatives. The intervention aims at greater continuity between different functions, with the idea that the square will once again become a traversable and recognizable place, not just an urban void.

Via Gioia del Colle, from passing to stopping.

The green area of Via Gioia del Colle, hitherto used mainly as a pedestrian corridor, will be reconfigured as a real public space. The paths will follow the traces left over time by the passage of people, consolidating the most used connections with permeable materials compatible with the landscape context. In the center will be created a widening equipped for meeting and small events, equipped with power connections to facilitate cultural and recreational activities. The project includes an inclusive play area, spaces for sports and new tall trees, as well as rationalization of parking along the street.

Centocelle, a garden to live in all day long

On Castor Durante Street, the intervention aims to ensure continuous and orderly enjoyment of the garden. The clear distinction between paved surfaces and green areas, along with fencing and regulation of access, will serve to improve the daily management of the space. At the request of residents, the care of the area will be entrusted to a cooperative pact, in line with the Regulations for the Shared Administration of Common Goods, to foster widespread responsibility.

Overall, the three projects tell a story of an idea of urban regeneration that starts from the bottom and tries to rebuild links between public spaces and communities. An attempt to reactivate social relations, restoring centrality to places that can once again become everyday presidia of proximity and inclusion.
