Instead, it is reality, and it is signed by the <strong>Scuola Superiore Sant&#8217;Anna <\/strong>of Pisa, which with a study <a href=\"https:\/\/advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adfm.202507462\">published<\/a> in <em><strong>Advanced Functional Materials<\/strong><\/em> has developed a technology capable of changing the way we think about electronics-and the management of technological waste. <\/p>\n\n<p>The project is called <strong>LIGASH<\/strong><em>(Laser Induced Graphene from waste Almond Shells<\/em>) and was funded by the Ministry of University and Research. It is coordinated by <g id=\"gid_2\">Francesco Greco<\/g>, associate professor of bioengineering, who together with an interdisciplinary team has demonstrated how almond shells can become the perfect basis for producing <g id=\"gid_3\">laser-induced graphene<\/g>, a highly conductive material obtained by &#8220;writing&#8221; directly on carbon using laser beams. The result is circuits, resistors, capacitances and even <strong>moisture sensors<\/strong> made entirely of bioderived materials and capable of degrading in the soil in about 90 days.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-la-svolta-dell-upcycling\"><strong>The turning point of upcycling<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Almond shells represent bulky waste that is difficult to dispose of. Yet, as chemical characterisation carried out by researchers has revealed, they are extremely rich in <g id=\"gid_0\">lignin<\/g>, an organic polymer that is ideally suited to the production of graphene. Thanks to a collaboration with the company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/damianorganic.it\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=19548178292&amp;gbraid=0AAAAACND-r9_bK7kdF-NUuvsyaNOCuPBU&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiA9OnJBhD-ARIsAPV51xPtsyvyJMgdGI3JBgXTnNpXxOTm-Hh38eNVcJBNe5Lccj__o3AiKEUaAnHVEALw_wcB\">Damiano Organic<\/a><\/strong>, a world leader in organic almond processing, the team had access to different types of shells and was able to create a composite by mixing their powder with <strong>chitosan<\/strong>, a biopolymer derived from crustaceans.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This resulted in flexible, uniform and stable films that are perfect as substrates for green electronics. Phd student <strong>Yulia Steksova<\/strong>, first author of the study, tells how <strong>graphene<\/strong> was obtained using ultraviolet and infrared lasers, with excellent results from the standpoint of conductivity and application versatility: the prototyped circuits work, and work well. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-un-cambio-di-paradigma\"><strong>A paradigm shift<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The most disruptive aspect is not just the ability to produce electronics from waste, but the fact that it is <strong>completely biodegradable<\/strong>. In a world awash in<strong> e-waste and microplastics<\/strong>, imagining environmental or biomedical sensors designed to dissolve naturally after use is not a detail-it is a possible revolution. <\/p>\n\n<p>The hypothesised applications range from soil moisture monitoring to water quality controls to single-use systems for health and agriculture. All devices that, instead of leaving a trail of unrecyclable waste, could <strong>return to the earth<\/strong> without unwanted impacts. &#8220;Developed by nature for nature,&#8221; summarises Steksova in describing the project&#8217;s philosophy  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-solo-elettronica\"><strong>Not only electronics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Upcycling almond shells could go beyond electronics. By modifying the composition of the material, the team has achieved a <strong>composite<\/strong> that is <strong>similar to natural leather<\/strong>, durable, sewable and free of the critical environmental issues of traditional tanneries. A prospect that also opens up scenarios for sustainable fashion and design.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Meanwhile, research continues: <strong>almond hus<\/strong>ks, as well as <strong>hazelnut and pistachio<\/strong> shells, are being tested, with encouraging preliminary results. In parallel, 3D printing of the same materials is being explored to obtain low-impact customised components. For <strong>Luca Sebastiani<\/strong>, of the <strong>Institute of Plant Production<\/strong>, this approach shows how innovation can make agriculture &#8220;an increasingly sustainable process,&#8221; turning what is now a cost into a new technological resource.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The Ligash project is one of the first concrete examples of how electronics can become truly <strong>circular<\/strong>, replacing fossil and hard-to-dispose-of materials with agricultural waste that nature itself is capable of reabsorbing.
