{"id":12398,"date":"2025-12-12T15:28:42","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T13:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/glaciers-are-abandoning-the-caucasus\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T19:00:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T17:00:56","slug":"glaciers-are-abandoning-the-caucasus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/en\/glaciers-are-abandoning-the-caucasus\/","title":{"rendered":"Glaciers are abandoning the Caucasus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the <strong>South Caucasus<\/strong>, the total area covered by ice and snow (the cryosphere) is receding at a rate that has no equivalent except in very few other regions of the Planet. The new policy brief from <strong>UNEP<\/strong>&#8216;s Adaptation at Altitude Programme,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/glaciers-south-caucasus-are-reaching-critical-tipping-point-reveals#:~:text=The%20policy%20brief%2C%20titled%20Melting,built%20into%20climate%20adaptation%20plans.\">&#8220;Melting Heritage: Adapting to a Changing Snow and Ice Cover in the South Caucasus<\/a>,&#8221; confirms that the area is experiencing the world&#8217;s second-highest rate of ice mass loss relative to total volume. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-una-criosfera-in-rapido-declino\"><strong>A rapidly declining cryosphere<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Between 2000 and 2020, the area occupied by glaciers <strong>has in fact shrunk by more than 23 per cent<\/strong>, with marked variations from country to country: in <strong>Azerbaijan<\/strong> the decrease reaches <strong>77 per cent<\/strong>, in <strong>Georgia<\/strong> 24 per cent.<strong>Armenia<\/strong>, with no glacial cover, however, observes a change in seasonal snowfall, which now lasts eleven days less and shows a reduced average depth of three centimetres. <\/p>\n\n<p>The response of Caucasus glaciers to rising temperatures is above the global average. According to the analyses presented, keeping warming within +1.5 \u00b0C would preserve about 40% of the ice mass. An increase of +3 \u00b0C, on the other hand, would almost lead to total deglaciation. Current international commitments place the Planet along a trajectory between +2.3 \u00b0C and +2.5 \u00b0C-a scenario that brings the region closer to the real possibility of losing most of its glaciers by 2100.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-risorse-idriche-e-territori-sempre-piu-esposti\"><strong>Water resources and increasingly exposed territories<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The shrinking cryosphere is changing the hydrological dynamics of the Caucasus, on which <strong>water supply<\/strong>, <strong>agriculture<\/strong>, and even <strong>energy<\/strong> depend. Shrinking snowpack and glaciers are altering seasonal river flows and increasing pressure on groundwater resources. And meanwhile, since 2000, <g id=\"gid_3\">groundwater withdrawals have increased by 25 per cent<\/g> in Georgia, doubled in Armenia, and nearly quadrupled in Azerbaijan. The approach of the so-called <g id=\"gid_4\"><g id=\"gid_5\">peak water<\/g><\/g> &#8211; the time when the glacial contribution to river runoff will begin to decline &#8211; represents a critical threshold for regional water security. Hydropower is also exposed: in Georgia it covers more than 80 per cent of national production, and plants such as the <strong>Enguri power plant<\/strong> depend directly on glacier-fed runoff.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Slope destabilisation, caused by glacial retreat and permafrost degradation, amplifies natural hazards such as landslides, rockfalls, ice avalanches, and GLOFs (flooding from glacial lakes). The 2023 incident in <strong>Shovi<\/strong>, Georgia, where a <strong>rock and ice avalanche<\/strong> caused a deadly debris flow, highlights how vulnerable the territories already are. <\/p>\n\n<p>In the face of these changes, cryosphere monitoring remains insufficient. Regional systems to observe permafrost and glacial lakes are lacking, whilst access to environmental data-including snow and ice data-remains limited in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, despite international commitments. The policy brief, a result of the<strong> Regional Adaptation Dialogue in the South Caucasus<\/strong> (RAFISC), recommends integrating the snow-ice component into National Climate Adaptation Plans and building a coherent monitoring network, combining in situ and satellite observations.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Such a rapidly dissolving glacial heritage calls for technical measures and, above all, imposes responses capable of <strong>holding together ecology, security and access to resources<\/strong>, before the point of no return is reached.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rapid glacier retreat in the Caucasus is redefining water resources, amplifying natural hazards, and influencing climate policies.
