But behind this apparent simplicity lies an environmental problem documented by a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/etc\/article\/45\/2\/490\/8415601?login=false\">recent study<\/a> published in the journal <em>Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry<\/em>. The most popular substances, <strong>isoxazolines<\/strong>, once ingested, continue to be biologically active even after excretion with feces and urine, ending up in the soil and affecting insects that should not be targets of these treatments.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dalla-cura-domestica-al-danno-ambientale\"><strong>From home care to environmental damage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Isoxazolines have been on the market since 2013 and are now among the most widely used active ingredients for flea and tick prevention. They act on the insects&#8217; nervous system and provide prolonged protection for dogs and cats for up to three months. <strong>Precisely this long persistence is, however, a problem<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>According to the study conducted by researchers at the <strong>Vetagro Sup veterinary school in Marcy-l&#8217;\u00c9toile<\/strong>, France, these molecules are eliminated very slowly from the animals&#8217; bodies. In some cases, active residues have been detected in the feces of dogs for up to six months after administration. This is a very long time, during which each excretion becomes a vehicle for environmental contamination.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-come-funziona\"><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The mechanism is simple: feces and urine end up in the soil, where they come into contact with coprophagous insects, such as dung beetles, flies and some butterflies. These organisms play a crucial role in recycling organic matter, improving soil quality and promoting soil fertility. To hit them is to set off a chain reaction.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Simulations by researchers indicate that up to 90 percent of insects feeding on contaminated feces <strong>may be exposed to potentially toxic doses.<\/strong> In ecological terms, this translates into a depletion of biodiversity and a slowing of natural decomposition processes, with effects that propagate throughout the food chain. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-un-problema-piu-ampio-di-quanto-sembri\"><strong>A wider problem than it seems<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Isoxazolines are not an isolated case. Many pet pesticides <strong>release substances into the environment that can contaminate soil and water.<\/strong> Previous studies have already shown the presence of veterinary pesticide residues in rivers, linked to animal washing or contact with household surfaces.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The new work adds a crucial piece: the fecal pathway represents a direct and constant source of contamination that is often underestimated.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quali-alternative-e-quali-responsabilita\"><strong>What alternatives and what responsibilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>Scientists are not calling for bans, but for greater caution<\/strong>. The indiscriminate use of flea preventers year-round, even in the absence of infestations, feeds a continuous flow of toxic substances into the environment. A more targeted approach, based on real risk, seasonality and animal-specific conditions, could dramatically reduce the impact.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Owners also have a key role to play: always collect droppings, dispose of them properly, and inform yourself about the environmental characteristics of the products you use are simple but decisive gestures.<\/p>\n\n<p>The health of our animals is not separate from the health of ecosystems. Pills that protect dogs and cats today <strong>could compromise tomorrow&#8217;s biodiversity<\/strong>.
