A zoologist, ethologist and painter in his spare time, Morris shifted his gaze: <strong>from man as the measure of all things to man as an object of study, on a par with other animals<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>His most famous book,<strong> <em>The Naked Ape<\/em><\/strong> (1967), sold in millions of copies, was born from a simple and destabilizing insight: to observe<em>Homo sapiens<\/em> with the tools of zoology. &#8220;There are 193 living species of apes &#8230; the exception is a naked ape who has named himself Homo sapiens,&#8221; he wrote, ironically dismantling a supposed superiority that modernity had taken for granted. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-l-uomo-nello-zoo\"><strong>The man in the zoo<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Morris&#8217;s work is in the groove of<strong>European ethology<\/strong>, alongside the studies of <strong>Konrad Lorenz<\/strong> and <strong>Iren\u00e4us Eibl-Eibesfeldt<\/strong>, but with a distinctive feature: taking these ideas out of the academy. From television programs such as Zoo Time to popular books, his goal has been to make human behavior legible as evolutionary outcomes. <\/p>\n\n<p>In his scheme, gestures, social rituals, sexuality and even the organization of cities become adaptations. The relative nakedness of humans, for example, is linked to the need for physical contact between mother and infant; the long dependence of the young, to neoteny, that is, the maintenance of infant characteristics for an extended period. From this, Morris argues, descend cooperation, social bonds and even some forms of aggression.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-le-polemiche-e-i-limiti\"><strong>The controversies and limitations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>In the 1960s and 1970s, many considered his theses reductionist: explaining human complexity from biology appeared simplistic at times. The religious world reacted to the downsizing of human primacy, while part of the scientific community objected to the lack of solid empirical evidence. <\/p>\n\n<p>Feminist movements also criticized some interpretations related to gender roles. Yet, net of the objective limitations child of their time, Morris&#8217;s contribution had a lasting effect: cracking the rigid dualism between nature and culture. A choice that today, among neuroscience, ecology and behavioral studies, appears well radiated.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-siamo-animali-e-non-e-un-offesa\"><strong>&#8220;We are animals, and that&#8217;s no offense<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n<p>Morris never backed down on a point.<strong>&#8220;Calling human beings animals is not degrading to me<\/strong>,&#8221; he replied to those who accused him of debasing humanity. On the contrary, his work invites recognition of a biological continuity that can also become an ecological responsibility. <\/p>\n\n<p>Indeed, looking at humans as part of the animal world means scaling back that &#8220;species pride&#8221; that has contributed to the environmental crisis. In this sense, his thinking dialogues with contemporary sensibilities: understanding that we are not outside ecosystems, but immersed in them. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tra-arte-e-scienza\"><strong>Between art and science<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>Morris was also a Surrealist painter<\/strong>, exhibiting his work alongside Joan Mir\u00f3 and reflecting on the link between creativity and biology. For him, art and science were different tools for investigating the same enigma, that of behavior. Television popularization, research and artistic production coexisted in his path. A hybrid figure, more relevant today than ever, in an age that requires languages capable of connecting knowledge.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-un-eredita-scomoda\"><strong>An uncomfortable legacy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Nearly sixty years later, <em>The Naked Ape<\/em> remains a controversial text, at times dated, but still capable of asking an essential question: <strong>how much of what we call culture is rooted in an older biological history?<\/strong> In times of climate crisis and biodiversity loss, recognizing our continuity with the rest of the living can change the way we inhabit the Planet. Morris, for all his simplifications, has opened a breach: bringing us back into the animal world not to &#8220;shrink us,&#8221; but to better understand who we are. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With &#8220;The Naked Ape,&#8221;
