Today, that web is thinning. According to studies cited by researchers involved in European projects on odor conservation, <strong>a combination of rising temperatures, air pollution and loss of biodiversity is measurably changing the so-called &#8220;olfactory landscape<\/strong>&#8220;: some scents are changing in intensity or composition, others are in danger of disappearing altogether.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-il-clima-cambia-anche-cio-che-non-si-vede\"><strong>Climate changes even what you can&#8217;t see<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Odors are composed of volatile molecules released from plants, soils, water or man-made materials. Their presence in the air depends on precise physical variables. &#8220;If the temperature increases even slightly, the profile of chemical components in the air changes,&#8221; chemical engineer <strong>Idelfonso Nogueira<\/strong>, involved in the <strong>SCENTinel<\/strong> project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/earths-smells-are-disappearing-because-of-climate-change-and-its-a-vast-cultural-loss-180988496\/\">explained<\/a> to <em>Smithsonian Magazine<\/em>. Translated: a warmer forest doesn&#8217;t smell as good as it used to.   <\/p>\n\n<p>The effect is already observable in different environments. Snow, for example, loses its typical &#8220;clean&#8221; fragrance because it absorbs more chemicals as temperatures rise. In cities, on the other hand, hot weather accelerates the release of volatile organic compounds from asphalt, buildings and garbage, intensifying unpleasant and potentially harmful odors.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-biodiversita-in-crisi-profumi-a-rischio\"><strong>Biodiversity in crisis, scents at risk<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Climate change also acts indirectly: it reduces biodiversity. And <strong>when a plant species disappears, so does its smell<\/strong>. This is the case with plants such as sandalwood, vanilla, lavender and bergamot, the latter of which concentrates more than 95 percent of the world&#8217;s production in Calabria and is increasingly exposed to unstable weather conditions.  <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Without these fragrances we lose information, meaning, stories,&#8221; warned <strong>Cecilia Bembibre<\/strong>, a researcher at<strong>University College London<\/strong>. Some fragrances are linked to millennia-old practices: frankincense, for example, used for more than 3,000 years in religious rituals, is threatened by the Boswellia tree crisis. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cultura-e-identita-passano-dal-naso\"><strong>Culture and identity go through the nose<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>A second strand of research highlights how odor loss has profound social implications. In the Amazon, indigenous communities report a change in the smell of the Amazon due to pollution. In some local cosmologies, the altered smell of the river coincides with the &#8220;flight&#8221; of spiritual entities.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Similar situations emerge in Brazil, where rituals such as Lavagem do Bonfim rely on the use of scented water and flowers. &#8220;The sense of smell has been what has survived a history of oppression,&#8221; Nogueira noted. But without access to natural raw materials, even these traditions are in danger of being disrupted.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-effetti-su-salute-e-disuguaglianze\"><strong>Effects on health and inequality<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>Air pollution directly damages the human olfactory system<\/strong>. Studies cited by neuroscientist Rachel Herz show that those living in more polluted areas have a lower ability to distinguish odors. A finding that is intertwined with urban inequalities: the most deprived areas are often also the most exposed.Loss of the sense of smell, moreover, has documented psychological consequences. During the pandemic, 56 percent of those affected by anosmia reported a deterioration in quality of life, while 43 percent developed depressive symptoms.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ricostruire-cio-che-stiamo-perdendo\"><strong>Rebuilding what we are losing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Research is running for cover. European laboratories are working on <strong>chemical reconstructions of historical odors, while artificial intelligence models try to predict how they will change in the future<\/strong>. The goal is to make the climate crisis perceptible in a more direct way than images. &#8220;Smell acts on emotions in an immediate way,&#8221; Nogueira pointed out. Making people smell the difference between a forest of yesterday and one of tomorrow could become a powerful tool for awareness. In the meantime, the scientists&#8217; advice is simple and concrete: <strong>go back to using your nose, to recognize a signal that goes unnoticed<\/strong>.
