How long can gas and oil prices continue to dictate household budgets, daily choices, and the ability to heat the home or move? The answer is in the figures of an analysis published by the Danish climate think tank CONCITO<\/a><\/strong>. Eloquent title: “Taking back control. The case for electrification for households.” <\/p>\n\n

European households that replace gas boilers with heat pumps and combustion cars with electric vehicles can reduce their annual energy expenses significantly and structurally: not as a temporary effect of subsidies or incentives, but as a result of the greater efficiency of electric technologies compared to fossil fuels. A difference that, in the current context of oil and gas prices pushed up by the Iran conflict, becomes even more pronounced. <\/p>\n\n

The numbers that change the picture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

CONCITO’s analysis, prepared on the latest available data from Eurostat, calculates potential savings for an average household <\/strong>in five major EU countries-France, Spain, Germany, Italy and Poland<\/strong>. The results are consistent and in some ways surprising in their magnitude. <\/p>\n\n

A French family that abandons gas boiler and traditional car in favor of heat pump and electric vehicle saves an average of 3,070 euros a year-the<\/strong> highest value among the countries analyzed. A Spanish family saves about 2,000 euros, a German family about 1,950, a Polish family about 1,870 and an Italian family about 1,780 euros<\/strong>. The European average stands at 2,220 euros annually.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

It should be noted that these figures refer to a pre-crisis scenario, based on energy prices in the period before the escalation in Iran. The report also includes an analysis that incorporates current price increases: in this scenario, the expected savings for an average EU household go up by 59 percent compared to the baseline scenario. In other words: the more expensive gas and oil become, the more worthwhile it is to switch to electric<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Jens Mattias Clausen<\/strong>, director of CONCITO’s EU division, is direct: “Households across Europe can save more than 2,200 euros a year on energy costs by replacing gas boilers and combustion engine cars with heat pumps and electric vehicles. This was true even before the current fossil fuel crisis, which underscores the huge potential of electrification to protect households from unaffordable energy bills.”<\/p>\n\n

The case of Italy: nearly eighteen months of free heating<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

For Italy, the 1,780 euros in potential annual savings is equivalent<\/strong>, as the report points out, to nearly 18 months of heating.<\/strong> A not insignificant benefit in a country where energy poverty is a concrete reality for a growing segment of the population, and where the residential energy mix is still heavily dependent on natural gas. <\/p>\n\n

The issue is particularly relevant because Italy imports about 90 percent of its gas needs<\/strong>: a structural vulnerability that manifested itself in all its drama during the energy crisis of 2022, which followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and which is being repeated today with the conflict in Iran. Gas dependence<\/strong> is not just a question of cost: it is a question of energy sovereignty, of the ability to guarantee essential services to citizens<\/strong> regardless of international geopolitical dynamics.<\/p>\n\n

Within this framework, the spread of heat pumps and electric vehicles is a rational response to a structural problem. Heat pumps<\/strong>, in particular, produce 2.5 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed<\/strong>, an efficiency unmatched by gas heating.<\/p>\n\n

A strategic turning point for the whole of Europe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

The benefits of electrification, however, do not end with individual household bills. The CONCITO report frames the issue in a broader geopolitical dimension, which concerns the strategic autonomy of the European Union. <\/p>\n\n

If all 65 million existing gas boilers in Europe were replaced with heat pumps, the EU’s overall dependence <\/strong> on gas imports would be halved<\/strong>. If half of the combustion cars on European roads switched to electric, oil imports would be reduced by 20 percent<\/strong>. Taken together, these two measures would significantly reduce the continent’s vulnerability to instrumental use of its dependence on fossil fuels. <\/p>\n\n

These are technically achievable goals with the technologies already available, provided public policies remove the obstacles currently holding back the transition. An electrified energy system<\/strong> powered by renewables produced in Europe would ensure <\/strong>not only strategic autonomy but also greater price stability in the long run<\/strong> because sun and wind, unlike Russian gas or Middle Eastern oil, do not have market prices subject to speculation and geopolitical crises.<\/p>\n\n

Obstacles to be removed: taxation, upfront costs, access to credit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

If electrification is so cost-effective, why is it not happening spontaneously? The report identifies three main categories of obstacles: distorted energy taxation, high upfront costs, and difficult access to credit<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

On the tax front, the problem is paradoxically created by member states’ own policies. In many EU countries, natural gas is still taxed more favorably than electricity<\/strong>, a distortion inherited from decades of energy policy that does not take into account the efficiency of electricity technologies. The remedy is relatively simple: rebalance gas and electricity taxation to reflect the efficiency reality of available technologies. <\/p>\n\n

The second obstacle is the initial cost. Electric vehicles have significantly reduced the price gap with combustion cars<\/strong>, and in some market segments they are already competitive. For heat pumps<\/strong>, however, the situation is more complex: the cost of purchase and installation remains significantly higher than that of a gas boiler<\/strong>, despite the operational savings that make them more affordable over time. The report estimates that a targeted subsidy of about \u20ac4,500 would reduce the average payback period for a heat pump to five years for the average European household. A time horizon that is acceptable for those with access to credit or sufficient savings, but remains too long for low-income households or those living in rented accommodation. <\/p>\n\n

This is where the third obstacle comes into play: access to credit and financing. The report cites the social leasing<\/strong> model already pioneered in France for electric vehicles as a means of extending the benefits of electrification to segments of the population that cannot afford a high initial investment. Low-interest loans, lease programs with a purchase option, public guarantee funds-these are all tools that can lower the barrier to entry without increasing the public deficit, if they are well structured. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
