There are those who see wind turbines<\/a> as a wound in the landscape and those, instead, who build an itinerary around them to bring attention back to the gentle development of inland areas. Legambiente <\/strong>has chosen the second path and has been doing so for five years now with“Wind Parks<\/a>,” the tourist guide to Italian wind farms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Thirty-four wind farms mapped from north to south, with a special focus on the south of Italy, where the wind blows hardest and tourism still has ample room for growth. The guide is not limited to the technical data sheets of the plants: it shows how to reach them, what trails to take, where to sleep, what to eat. It is an invitation to discover the Italy that is less traveled<\/strong>, the Italy of medieval villages, forgotten archaeological sites, and agricultural and food excellences that grow in the shadow of the blades. <\/p>\n\n

Trekking, biking, horseback riding, climbing, rafting, birdwatching: the activities offered around the facilities are designed for those who want to move unhurriedly, with their eyes open to a landscape that changes and never stops telling history and culture.<\/p>\n\n

The seven new entries of 2026<\/h3>\n\n

This year the map is enriched with seven new parks: four in Sicily, one in Sardinia, one in Campania and one in Puglia. It is a geography that confirms the central role of the South in Italy’s energy transition, but also the tourism potential of territories that often struggle to attract visitors. <\/p>\n\n

In the municipalities of Partinico, Monreale, Camporeale and Salemi-Castelvetrano, the wind farms of Western Sicily offer an itinerary that brings together technological modernity and timeless art: the cathedral of Monreale, the village of Salemi, the temples of Selinunte, the mosaics of Borgo Parrini, among olive groves and doc wines. In the Catania area, the Mineo-Militello-Vizzini park (100.8 MW) has benefited from repowering-the replacement of old blades with more powerful, less numerous turbines-clearing space for new trails with views of Mount Etna and creating connections with Verga’s literary sites, the medieval village of Mineo and the Unesco baroque town of Militello. <\/p>\n\n

In Sardinia, the Sa Turrina Manna Park (80 MW), in the municipalities of Tula and Erula, is already cited as a model: the plant’s maintenance roads have become paths for walkers and cyclists, with views of Gallura and Monte Acuto, between Lake Coghinas, the forests of the plateau and the traditions of the village of Tula.<\/p>\n\n

In Campania, Baselice Park (36 MW), at an altitude of almost 900 meters in the Beneventan area, is a gateway to the Apennines: walking and biking routes along the ridges of the Fortore Valley reach out to the overlooks of Puglia and Molise, the path of San Giovanni Eremita and the shores of Lake Occhito, a birdwatching paradise. Finally, in Puglia, Mondonuovo Park in Mesagne (53 MW) is set among Salento’s olive groves and along the route of the Appia Antica, with an itinerary that touches Mesagne’s heart-shaped historic center, the Orsini del Balzo Castle and the Messapian artifacts of the Granafei Museum. <\/p>\n\n

Repowering changes the landscape<\/h3>\n\n

One of the key words of this edition is “repowering”: the replacement of obsolete plants with new generation turbines: taller, more powerful, but also much fewer. The result is that the same area can produce three times as much energy with half as many blades. Less visual clutter, less noise impact, more space for nature and visitors. And a concrete contribution to decarbonization: in 2025, wind power contributed 16.7 percent to Italy’s renewable production and 6.9 percent to overall electricity consumption. <\/p>\n\n

The guide brings all these elements together and is intended as a concrete tool to overcome the ideological opposition that has slowed the development of alternatives to the fossil economy: one that is jeopardizing the livability of large areas of the world and threatening to multiply the conflicts and wars whose dimensions we are beginning to glimpse.<\/p>\n\n

Everything has an environmental impact; the existence of our species modifies ecosystems. But for millennia, before the frenzied development of fossil fuels, human presence did not undermine global balances. Now it is doing so. And it is time to put in place the measures necessary for collective security. Especially when they are compatible with gentle economic development. <\/p>\n\n
