Citizens who have experienced power outages during the most intense heat waves know this all too well.

Until now, the effectiveness of photovoltaic panels in mitigating these summer emergencies was based on general estimates; now there is precise quantitative data. A study by Lucia Piazza and Francesco Pietro Colelli of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the EIEE-CMCC, published in the journal *Environmental Research: Energy*, demonstrates that rooftop solar panels can act as a structural buffer against the effects of extreme heat on electricity demand.

Energy Demand Between Now and 2050

By 2050, global warming will drive up electricity consumption for residential cooling by approximately 2–3 TWh per year: a 5% increase compared to Italy’s total residential demand in 2023. The main problem is the temporal concentration of this demand, which peaks during summer afternoons when the power grid is already operating at capacity. Without an acceleration in solar installations, the additional demand from air conditioners will place a burden of 1.6 TWh on the grid as early as 2030, rising to 2.8 TWh by mid-century. To estimate the actual impact, the researchers cross-referenced consumption data provided by ARERA, municipal maps from the GSE Solar Atlas, and climate projections from the international CMIP6 framework.

The 68% reduction during peak hours

The analysis focuses on the behavior of households equipped with a rooftop solar system. On extremely hot days, when air conditioners are running at full capacity, these households reduce their electricity consumption from the grid by 68% compared to those without solar panels. The reason is a physical phenomenon: when temperatures are higher, solar radiation is at its peak; energy is produced and consumed on-site, powering the air conditioner directly and reducing the load on distribution lines.

“Roof-mounted solar panels offer an effective solution: they can offset nearly half of the increase in electricity demand during peak cooling periods,” explains lead author Lucia Piazza. “This demonstrates how clean energy can combat climate change and help people cope with its effects, potentially reducing household energy costs.” If the adoption of residential solar power follows TERNA’s projections—rising from the current 6% of households to 22–24% by 2050— the climate-related strain on the grid will be nearly halved.

The regional divide between the North and the South

These benefits are not distributed evenly. The northern regions and the islands, where installation rates have historically been higher, will see the most significant reductions in their reliance on the grid. Sardinia, Trentino, and Friuli, despite having lower cooling needs in absolute terms, will see reductions of more than 15% thanks to the widespread adoption of solar power.

In contrast, large urban centers such as Rome, Naples, and Palermo find themselves in what the study defines as a state of “double vulnerability”: these are the cities that will experience the most severe temperature increases and where consumption peaks will be concentrated, yet they have the lowest rates of photovoltaic installation in the country. “This study offers valuable insights into the potential of solar power to address the effects of global warming in the residential sector,” notes Francesco Pietro Colelli. Without targeted incentives for apartment buildings and homes in major cities in southern Italy, households risk bearing the brunt of the impact in terms of utility bills and instability in the electricity supply—a disparity that the researchers view as a concrete risk of inequality in the energy transition.

The Role of Batteries

A solar panel generates energy during daylight hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The problem is that in the summer, air conditioners remain on even in the evening, when the sun has set and the solar panels are no longer generating any energy. At that point, those without a battery must rely on the grid again. Those who combine their system with a storage solution, however, can use the energy produced during the day in the evening, further reducing their draw on the grid during peak hours. The researchers do not include this scenario in the main model because battery costs remain high, their environmental impact during production and disposal is still being studied, and economic viability depends heavily on each household’s specific situation. The implicit suggestion is that the benefits estimated by the study are likely an underestimate: with widespread adoption of home energy storage, residential solar power could relieve the grid to an even greater extent than current figures suggest.

A study by Ca’ Foscari University and EIEE-CMCC quantifies, for the first time, the extent to which residential solar power can offset the increase in electricity consumption for cooling in Italy

[1597,1599
1840,2306,1769
post-19982","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-climate-crisis","category-energy","tag-extreme-heat","tag-heat-emergency","tag-photovoltaic

Hotter weather, more air conditioners, more power outages: Can solar power break this cycle?
