Renewable energy sources continue to grow and are reshaping the geography of Europe\u2019s energy transition. In the first quarter of 2026, the European Union reached 45.5% of its electricity generated from renewables<\/a>. Behind this average lie significant disparities among member states: some are now close to an almost carbon-free electricity system, while others remain far from that goal. <\/p>\n\n

Wind Power Drives Change<\/h3>\n\n

Wind power<\/strong> leads the renewable energy mix , accounting for nearly 45% of all renewable energy<\/strong> produced in the European Union. This is followed by hydropower at 28% and solar power at 17.3%<\/strong>, while geothermal and other sources account for the remainder.<\/p>\n\n

This landscape confirms that European growth does not depend on a single technology. Where wind is abundant, wind turbines prevail; where water availability allows, hydropower continues to play a major role; meanwhile, solar power continues to increase its contribution, consolidating a more diversified energy mix than in the past. <\/p>\n\n

A Divided Europe<\/h3>\n\n

While the overall figures are encouraging, the national data show that Europe is still far from being homogeneous.<\/p>\n\n

Denmark tops the rankings, with 90% of its electricity generated from renewable sources<\/strong>, thanks primarily to wind power. Behind it are Portugal, which reaches 82.9%<\/strong> by relying primarily on hydropower, and Lithuania, at 75.7%<\/strong>, still driven by wind power.<\/p>\n\n

At the opposite end of the spectrum are the Czech Republic (12.7%), Malta (13%), and Slovakia (17.2%)<\/strong>. These differences reflect the availability of natural resources, industrial choices, investments, and the pace of energy policy implementation. <\/p>\n\n

The geography of the transition, therefore, remains highly uneven: while some countries have now built an electricity system powered largely by renewable energy sources, others remain heavily dependent on conventional sources.<\/p>\n\n

Not Just the Climate<\/h3>\n\n

The growth of renewable energy does not only have an impact on emissions. According to the International Energy Agency, the reduction in fossil fuel imports in 2025 saved the European Union 51.4 billion euros. Another study by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) estimates that, in 2026, the high share of clean energy will allow consumers in Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden, and Slovakia to save a total of 8.5 billion euros on their energy bills. <\/p>\n\n

In recent weeks, however, the surge in gas prices and the heat wave that has swept across Europe have served as a reminder of just how vulnerable the system still is. As long as gas-fired power plants are needed to meet peak demand, the price of electricity will continue to be affected by fluctuations in the fossil fuel market. <\/p>\n\n

That is why 45.5% represents a significant milestone. Europe is producing more and more renewable electricity; the challenge now is to ensure that this growth also translates into a more stable energy system\u2014one that is less vulnerable to international crises and capable of delivering widespread economic benefits to citizens. <\/p>\n\n
