One centimeter per year. It doesn\u2019t seem like much, but multiplied by millions, it creates a problem: cars are getting bigger and taking up more space in the city. New models are getting longer by an average of 1.2 cm each year<\/strong>, and they\u2019re gaining another half centimeter in both height and width. People in the Anglo-Saxon world have dubbed this phenomenon \u201ccarspreading\u201d: the gradual expansion of vehicles within historic city centers, which, of course, remain the same size<\/strong> and were designed primarily for pedestrians. <\/p>\n\n

The paradox is that all of this is happening even as household sizes shrink and cars are driven primarily by a single person. According to a study published by Transport & Environment and <\/a> the Clean Cities Campaign<\/a>, the explanation lies in industry strategies: automakers have gradually moved away from compact models to focus on SUVs and large cars, which are much more profitable. <\/p>\n\n

The Disappearing Public Space<\/h3>\n\n

The report compares the current scenario with an alternative one, in which regulatory measures would bring the size of new vehicles back to 2015 levels. Without a change in course, by 2040\u2014assuming parking space remains constant\u2014between 8.5% and 14% of on-street parking spaces in Europe would be lost. In Rome, between 58,000 and 95,000 parking spaces would disappear; in Milan, between 17,000 and 28,000<\/strong>\u2014nearly one in ten. London and Berlin could each lose over 100,000<\/strong>. According to Andrea Boraschi<\/strong>, director of T&E Italia, after 25 years of uninterrupted growth, cities risk having to expand existing parking spaces by sacrificing more public land\u2014a prospect, he warns, that must be avoided at all costs. <\/p>\n\n

Pedestrians pay the highest price<\/h3>\n\n

Then there is a section on safety. A higher front end and greater mass result in more severe impacts for pedestrians and cyclists. If current trends continue, by 2040 there would be 400 more deaths per year among vulnerable road users compared to the mitigation scenario; between 2026 and 2040, the additional death toll would be 2,500 adults and 79 children. Children are particularly at risk: with hoods reaching an average height of 86.2 cm by 2040, a child struck by a vehicle will be hit in the head or chest, and the number of child pedestrian fatalities could rise by 40%. Claudio Magliulo, the Italian director of Clean Cities, points out that physics cannot be disputed, but that this trend is not inevitable: it is the result of market choices. <\/p>\n\n

What Can Be Done<\/h3>\n\n

The two organizations are calling on the European Union to set a limit of 85 cm for front-end height and 192 cm for width, to apply to new vehicle approvals starting in 2033 and to all cars sold starting in 2036. At the national level, they propose a tax system that penalizes oversized vehicles, while municipalities could already begin adjusting parking fees based on weight and size. Rounding out the package are updates to the Euro NCAP tests\u2014including visibility of children from the driver\u2019s seat\u2014and incentives reserved for compact electric vehicles no longer than 4.2 meters. <\/p>\n\n

A trend that doesn’t pay off<\/h3>\n\n

Finally, this trend toward ever-larger vehicles also has industrial implications, as it weakens the European automotive industry\u2019s ability to withstand competition from Beijing. While European automakers focused on large SUVs\u2014which yield higher profit margins per unit than small cars\u2014Chinese manufacturers have focused on electric city cars, which are more maneuverable and economical: despite tariffs, an electric car made in China costs, on average, 21% less than a European one. The results speak for themselves. Between January and April 2026, Chinese brands accounted for about 6% of new vehicle registrations in the European Union\u2014double the figure from a year earlier\u2014and in the first quarter, Chinese-made electric cars accounted for 17% of the European battery-electric vehicle market. This is the paradox of the \u201cgiants\u2019 strategy\u201d: each car is more profitable, but prices rise and the number of European cars sold declines, leaving the field open to rivals. According to T&E estimates, if the European Union were to relax its emissions targets, the share of Chinese brands in the electric vehicle market could reach 30% by 2035. <\/p>\n\n
