This is the description of <strong>the new monkey species discovered in the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/strong>, in the region between the Lomami and Lualaba rivers. Researchers have named it <strong><em>Colobus congoensis<\/em><\/strong>; for the Bangala people of the area, it is the \u201clikweli,\u201d while the Mituku call it <em>kasabankoni<\/em>, meaning \u201cthe one who shakes the branches.\u201d The discovery, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0349857\">published in the journal <em>PLOS One<\/em><\/a>, is anything but ordinary:<strong> it is only the fifth species of African monkey described in the last 75 years<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"New Monkey Species Discovered in the Congo\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QbTr3V0Vs4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-quasi-vent-anni-sulle-sue-tracce\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearly twenty years on his trail<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t easy to track it down. The first sighting dates back to 2008, when two conservationists from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforesttrust.org\/get-involved\/rainforest-trust-partners\/lukuru-wildlife-research-foundation\/\">the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation<\/a> took a blurry photo of an unidentified primate in what would become Lomami National Park in 2016. Then there was silence, until November 2018, when a surveillance patrol led by Jean Pierre Kapale managed to photograph the animal again. Its closest relative, <em>Colobussatanas<\/em>, lives more than 1,200 kilometers away in central-western Africa; yet the two lineages diverged between 4 and 5 million years ago, one of the oldest evolutionary splits ever documented among colobus monkeys. Its call also sets it apart: recordings show that its deep sounds have a unique acoustic signature.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-scoperta-appena-in-tempo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discovered Just in Time<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this enthusiasm is accompanied by a real concern. <strong>The likweli\u2019s range is minuscule, and the species is already under pressure from hunting and habitat loss<\/strong>; for this reason, scientists recommend that it be listed as an endangered species.
