{"id":20807,"date":"2026-07-21T15:07:39","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T13:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/mount-olympus-put-to-the-test-by-unesco\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T08:55:59","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T06:55:59","slug":"mount-olympus-put-to-the-test-by-unesco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/en\/mount-olympus-put-to-the-test-by-unesco\/","title":{"rendered":"Mount Olympus Put to the Test by UNESCO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-\"><strong>At 2,918 meters, Mount Olympus is the highest peak in Greece<\/strong> and, for centuries, has been much more than just a geographical feature: legend places the palace of Zeus and the twelve gods of antiquity there. Rare species of flora and fauna thrive around the mountain, and monuments that intertwine its history with myth still stand. This dual value\u2014environmental and cultural\u2014forms <strong>the basis of the application for inclusion on the UNESCO list<\/strong>, submitted by Greece as early as 2014 and set to be reviewed at the World Heritage Committee session scheduled to take place in Seoul from July 19 to 29.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process, however, has not been straightforward. UNESCO\u2019s advisory bodies (IUCN for natural heritage and ICOMOS for cultural heritage) have requested additional information for the nomination file: <strong>more solid evidence is needed regarding the area\u2019s geological significance, biodiversity, and ecological processes<\/strong>. On the cultural front, the experts suggested expanding the nomination to include the archaeological site of Dion, at the foot of the massif.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-l-olimpo-e-la-nostra-vita\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Olympus is our life&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who live in those valleys, the connection to the mountain is a daily one. \u201cMount Olympus is our life. It\u2019s the place where we grew up, the place we see every day\u201d! says the mayor of Dio-Olimpo, <strong>Evangelos Geroliolios<\/strong>, who notes that the mountain preserves \u201cmyth, history, biodiversity, and immense cultural significance.\u201d Any such recognition, he adds, would extend beyond national borders to encompass the entire world, but it would also entail greater responsibilities for environmental protection.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-il-nodo-del-turismo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Issue of Tourism<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protecting the ecosystem is precisely the most sensitive issue. Inclusion on the list could attract new visitors, but it would also require stricter management. \u201cThe question is how many people this mountain and this ecosystem can sustain,\u201d warns <strong>Babis Marinidis<\/strong>, a mountaineer and president of the Litochoro Hiking Club, who points out that even today, rules\u2014from bans on camping to those on swimming in sensitive areas\u2014are often ignored.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, Mount Olympus draws thousands of hikers from all over the world, attracted by a landscape as spectacular as it is treacherous, with sudden changes in weather and challenging trails. For the residents of Litochoro, however, the verdict from Seoul would have primarily symbolic significance. \u201cMount Olympus isn\u2019t something we\u2019re just discovering now.
