Or perhaps we aren\u2019t really listening. Every year, news reports bring us facts that, when taken together, form a clear and detailed narrative. Every year, we react by trying to address individual problems without recognizing the connections and underlying causes. When there is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/en\/drought-in-europe-record-breaking-heat-is-drying-out-the-soil\/\">drought<\/a><\/strong> , some propose building more reservoirs. When <strong>floods<\/strong> strike, they suggest building higher river levees. <strong>The fact that these phenomena are becoming extreme due to the climate crisis caused by the overuse of fossil fuels and deforestation is considered an abstract concept<\/strong>\u2014something for books but not for legislative decrees. Similarly, the fact that soil depleted by an overdose of synthetic chemicals burns more easily during wildfires and limits water absorption during floods does not disrupt the enormous flow of money toward conventional agriculture.      <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-x\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Europe is burning. In recent days, the fire has reached a few kilometers from <strong>Bordeaux<\/strong>, after <strong>consuming more than 40,000 hectares of pine forest<\/strong> and sending smoke all the way into the city, <strong>making the air almost unbreathable.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further south, the flames crossed the Pyrenees: in the countryside west of Madrid, between \u00c1vila and Toledo, another 70,000 hectares have burned. <strong>Between France and Spain, more than 300,000 people have had to leave their homes<\/strong>. The cities we began building 10,000 years ago to defend ourselves from nature are not enough to protect us from the climate changes we have created. <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-una-situazione-mai-vista\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;An unprecedented situation&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> was forced to admit that such a situation has never been seen before. But unfortunately, it\u2019s hard to imagine that this record will remain unbroken: the trend in wildfires shows a worsening in line with climatologists\u2019 predictions. In fact, the deterioration is happening a bit faster than predicted. And the reason is simple: before climate scientists\u2019 studies are incorporated into UN documents, they must also receive approval from the countries that depend on oil and defend it, so everything is filtered through a lens of great caution.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, despite this caution, there was no shortage of warnings. According to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ipccitalia.cmcc.it\/ar6-sesto-rapporto-di-valutazione\/\">sixth IPCC report<\/a><\/strong> (the group of scientists coordinated by the United Nations), in a high-emissions scenario\u2014with warming of about 4 degrees by 2100\u2014the global area burned could increase by 50\u201370%, and the average frequency of fires by about 30%. <strong>By limiting warming to below 2 degrees, the projected increase in the area burned would be reduced to 30\u201335%, and the increase in frequency to 20%.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These warnings were promptly confirmed. <strong>In 2023, Canada experienced the most destructive wildfire season ever recorded<\/strong>: approximately 15 million hectares went up in smoke\u2014more than double the previous record set in 1989\u2014with over 200 communities evacuated and rescue workers arriving from twelve countries. <strong>2025 was the second-worst year on record. And this year, history repeated itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-x\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Video shows forest fires burning around a freight train in rural Canada, with the crew fearing the flames could reach them as bright orange flames surrounded the stranded train outside Armstrong, Ontario, late Tuesday. \u201cThis could potentially overtake us here, this has gotten a\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Xq4MzWc6nZ\">pic.twitter.com\/Xq4MzWc6nZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CBS News (@CBSNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CBSNews\/status\/2077440637100601704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 15, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could have been an opportunity to reflect on the need to cooperate to stem the climate crisis. Trump turned it into yet another source of political and climate destabilization: on the one hand, he continues to dismantle climate protection laws; on the other, he accuses Canada of the spread of smoke that crosses Canadian borders\u2014a consequence of the wildfires that White House policies are helping to fuel. <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-perfino-l-amazzonia-brucia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Even the Amazon is burning<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Even the Amazon is burning<\/strong>. The forest, traversed by the Amazon River\u2014which discharges one-fifth of the planet\u2019s total freshwater into the ocean\u2014should not be catching fire. But <strong>in 2024, Brazil lost 6.7 million hectares of primary tropical forest: an 80% increase compared to the previous year<\/strong>. A humid ecosystem has begun to behave like a dry savanna, although this year, due to temporary circumstances and an extraordinary effort by the Lula administration, the pressure has eased.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation is critical even on Italy\u2019s doorstep. In addition to Spain, Greece is now constantly grappling with increasingly severe wildfires, which are now encroaching on urban areas. <strong>In 2018, the Mati fire, just outside Athens, killed 102 people<\/strong>: the worst disaster in the country\u2019s recent history. In 2023, the Evros fire\u2014spanning over 93,000 hectares\u2014became the largest ever recorded in the European Union. This summer, Greek firefighters battled as many as sixty separate fires in a single day.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And floods are the logical conclusion of the cycle that drives temperatures ever higher. When the heat wave subsides, the overheated, moisture-laden air encounters cold air masses arriving from the north. It is suddenly cooled by the cold front, and the water vapor condenses violently. The result is self-sustaining thunderstorms, with intense, concentrated rainfall. This rain falls on <strong>soil hardened by drought, largely impervious, and depleted by pollution<\/strong>; thus, the water runs off the surface and swells the streams, turning them into liquid avalanches.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The damage is real. And we\u2019re seeing it year after year. But scientific reports clearly explain that it can be limited, that we can learn to live with it\u2014provided we make cities more livable, reduce pollution in rural areas, and make the energy system more sustainable. Many are working in the opposite direction.
