Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is <\/strong>one of those ideas that theelectric vehicle<\/a> industry has been promising for at least a decade: using vehicle batteries<\/strong>, when parked, as small, distributed storage units capable of absorbing excess renewable energy and feeding it back into the grid during periods of peak demand<\/strong>. To date, it has remained largely experimental, held back by high costs, inconsistent technical standards, and a number of compatible vehicles too small to make a difference. <\/p>\n\n

Something, however, is changing. The European electricity system is currently facing a more challenging phase than it did a few years ago: generation from renewable sources has grown, but so have the difficulties in managing a grid powered by intermittent sources such as solar and wind<\/strong>. It is against this backdrop that several manufacturers are once again investing in bidirectional charging, with more concrete commercial offerings than in the past. <\/p>\n\n

From the car battery to home energy<\/h3>\n\n

The principle behind Vehicle-to-Grid is simple: when a car is connected to the grid, it can store electricity during off-peak hours and feed it back into the grid when the system needs it. The vehicle\u2019s battery thus becomes a distributed energy reserve across the region. <\/p>\n\n

The most obvious application is home security. An electric car equipped with this technology can power certain essential devices during a power outage<\/strong>: refrigerators, lighting, pumps, and medical equipment. The duration depends on the battery\u2019s capacity and the home\u2019s energy consumption, but in some cases it can last for several days. <\/p>\n\n

In the United States, Ford has developed systems that allow certain electric and plug-in hybrid models to connect directly to the home\u2019s electrical system via an adapter and a transfer switch. “The energy source is already theirs; it’s right in their own driveway,” explained Amanda Roraff<\/strong>, head of business acceleration for Ford’s energy and grid services, as quoted by Euronews\/AP. <\/p>\n\n

Why V2G Is More Important Today Than It Was Yesterday<\/h3>\n\n

The most significant potential, however, lies in grid management. With the increase in solar and wind power, the electric grid is increasingly facing situations where more energy is produced than is needed. Without adequate storage systems, some of this electricity may be lost. <\/p>\n\n

In Germany, in 2024, approximately 9,374 GWh of renewable energy was wasted because it could not be fed into the grid at the time of production, according to data reported by Euronews. According to the same analysis, that amount would be enough to power about three million electric vehicles for a year<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

A study<\/a> by the Fraunhofer Society, commissioned by Transport & Environment, estimated that a fully developed Vehicle-to-Grid system in Europe could reduce energy system costs by up to 22 billion euros per year by 2040<\/strong>, thanks to reduced grid expansion needs and more efficient use of energy generated from renewable sources.<\/p>\n\n

From Testing to the Market: Manufacturers Are Trying Again<\/h3>\n\n

After years of pilot projects and announcements that often failed to materialize, V2G is gradually entering the commercial phase. Volkswagen, through its energy brand Elli, is developing an offering in Germany that integrates an electric vehicle, a smart meter, a bidirectional charger, and an energy rate plan. <\/p>\n\n

According to the company, under favorable conditions, owners could earn between 700 and 900 euros per year by allowing their battery to be used to help balance the grid while their vehicle is parked.<\/p>\n\n

“Electric mobility can only reach its full potential if it is also economically beneficial for our customers,” said Martin Sander<\/strong>, a member of Volkswagen’s board of directors responsible for sales and marketing, as quoted by Euronews\/AP.<\/p>\n\n

Other automotive groups are also developing similar solutions. Nissan has announced a bidirectional charging service in the United Kingdom, while Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have launched projects in the Netherlands. Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, has announced V2G solutions for certain electric models through a partnership with The Mobility House. <\/p>\n\n

The same old obstacles, but perhaps closer to being overcome<\/h3>\n\n

The main limitation remains widespread adoption<\/strong>. Currently, only a small number of electric vehicle models support full bidirectional charging, and installing the necessary equipment may require a greater investment than a standard home charging station. <\/p>\n\n

There are also technical and regulatory issues that have been known for some time: connections must be authorized by energy providers, and manufacturers are still evaluating the effects of additional charge-and-discharge cycles on battery life. These are the very same challenges that have kept Vehicle-to-Grid in the experimental phase for a decade: the difference today is that, for the first time, major manufacturers are attempting to resolve them with actual commercial offerings, not just pilot projects. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
