{"id":21714,"date":"2026-09-07T14:39:41","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T12:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/ultra-fast-fashion-is-becoming-a-financial-risk\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T15:12:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T13:12:29","slug":"ultra-fast-fashion-is-becoming-a-financial-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/en\/ultra-fast-fashion-is-becoming-a-financial-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultra-fast fashion is becoming a financial risk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 1, Shein, one of the leading ultra-fast fashion platforms, made its debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with a valuation of approximately $27 billion, after abandoning its attempts to list in London and New York. <strong>This figure, compared to the nearly $100 billion it had reached in the private market in 2022, represents a 70% decline.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-perche-i-mercati-si-sono-tirati-indietro\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the markets pulled back<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCapital markets do not act out of pure altruism: they react to concrete financial risks,\u201d Ildiko Almasi Simsic, founder of the consulting firm E&amp;S Solutions, <a href=\"https:\/\/it.euronews.com\/2026\/09\/06\/debutto-in-borsa-di-shein-flop-e-la-fine-dellultra-fast-fashion\">explained<\/a> to <em>Euronews Earth<\/em>. According to Simsic, the lagging stock prices and discounted valuations demonstrate that investors<strong>\u201crecognize ESG issues as direct threats to a company\u2019s ultimate value<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model on which this industry segment has grown\u2014thousands of new product codes per day, small batches tested on the market, and supply chains fragmented among dozens of subcontractors\u2014has made it possible to drive down prices. Today, according to Simsic, that fragmentation is \u201ca key risk to the business,\u201d because it makes it impossible to control the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sostanze-chimiche-che-restano-nei-tessuti\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chemicals That Remain in Fabrics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, a Greenpeace Germany investigation found chemicals exceeding EU limits in 7 of the 47 garments analyzed. In 2025, the organization repeated the test on 56 garments across eight countries: 18\u201432%\u2014still exceeded the limits, including children\u2019s clothing. Among the substances were phthalates and PFAS\u2014the \u201cforever chemicals\u201d\u2014which have been linked to cancer, fertility issues, and developmental delays in children.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2025<em>BBC<\/em> investigation documented workweeks of up to 75 hours and only one day off per month at some supplier factories. A 2024 report by Public Eye highlights that excessive overtime remains widespread, despite the commitments made following the initial investigations. Cases of child labor in the supply chain\u2014acknowledged by the Hong Kong-listed company\u2014were also recorded in 2023.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA business model that floods the market with thousands of garments a day for just a few euros can only survive by passing on the real costs to workers and the environment,\u201d Simsic notes. \u201cWhen a garment is produced for fractions of a cent per stitch, fair wages and materials not derived from fossil fuels become incompatible with that price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-la-legge-francese-cambia-le-regole\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>French Law Changes the Rules<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France has enacted a law that taxes ultra-fast-fashion garments based on the volume placed on the market and the cost of repair: ranging from 50 cents for a piece of underwear to 12 euros for a jacket, with a cap that will rise to 19.50 euros by 2030.
