Monviso continues to lose chunks of rock<\/strong>. Following the major rockfall on September 1, additional rockfalls have been recorded on the northeastern slope\u2014smaller in scale but sufficient to keep the area active. The clouds of dust rising from the gullies are now the most obvious sign of a phenomenon that ARPA Piemonte believes could continue for quite some time, based in part on what has happened in previous incidents.<\/p>\n\n

On September 1, around 8:00 p.m., the largest landslide broke away<\/a> from the area upstream of the Torrione Saint Robert<\/strong>. Several thousand cubic meters of material\u2014consisting of small and medium-sized rocks along with larger boulders\u2014plummeted about one kilometer down the gully. One crucial factor in this incident was that no one was in the affected area at the time. However, the Quintino Sella mountain hut is visited daily during the summer season, and the eastern face is close to mountaineering routes and trails frequented by hikers.<\/p>\n\n

A mountain that is already fragile<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

The most important fact for understanding what is happening is perhaps the least spectacular one: Monviso is a heavily fractured massif. ARPA had already highlighted this condition in 2019 while studying the Torrione Sucai landslide, which had dislodged approximately 200,000 cubic meters of rock. Cracks and faults are particularly numerous on the northeast face, where some sections of rock are already partially separated from the rest of the massif.<\/p>\n\n

In a structure of this type, temperatures can become a source of additional stress. The rock, subjected to repeated cycles of heating and cooling, expands and contracts. Over time, this process can contribute to the formation of new fractures or the widening of existing ones. This is known as thermoclastism, a phenomenon particularly common in environments characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n

The ice that holds the walls together<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

There is also a second mechanism, less visible but equally significant: water that seeps into fractures and freezes can exert pressure on the rock, gradually widening the cracks. At high altitudes, permafrost\u2014permanently frozen ground\u2014also comes into play. In highly fractured rock masses, ice can act as a natural consolidating agent for long periods of time. As it degrades, this function gradually diminishes.<\/p>\n\n

The same applies to glaciers. Their retreat alters the distribution of stress in the underlying rock and can contribute to making it more unstable. On Mount Monviso, the small glacial systems have shrunk significantly in recent decades. On the northeastern slope, the Upper and Lower Coolidge glaciers are now considered extinct and have been classified as glacio-nivales since 2022.<\/p>\n\n

From Rock to Water<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

A photograph taken at the same time by the Carovana dei Ghiacciai<\/a> adds another piece to the puzzle. On Mount Monviso, experts had observed the near-complete depletion of the Coolidge Glacier, frequent rockfalls on the northeast face, and water stress in the Po River. The river, which originates at the foot of Mount Monviso, had recorded a flow deficit of 79% in July and 40% in August.<\/p>\n\n

These are different phenomena, but when observed in the same location, they reveal a consistent transformation of the high-altitude environment. The mountain does not react to a single weather event; rather, it responds to a combination of temperatures, water, ice, rock fracturing, and the gradual loss of the conditions that have long contributed to its stability.<\/p>\n\n

For those climbing toward Monviso, the most immediate consequence is practical. The slope affected by the rockfalls does not coincide with the most frequently used standard route, which ascends the south face, but it is close to other routes and areas frequented by hikers. Monitoring continues, and according to guidance from authorities and experts, special caution is required on the east face, and hikers should use the passages leading to the south side where indicated.<\/p>\n\n

The point, then, is not just the landslide on September 1. It is what that landslide reveals: in the high mountains, rock, ice, and water availability are all changing at the same time. And Monviso, with its fissures and now-shrunken glaciers, is one of the places where this change can be observed with particular clarity.<\/p>\n\n
