It is called sea ice and consists of frozen seawater, which is different from glaciers, which form on land. This preliminary figure comes from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the U.S. agency that has been collecting satellite measurements since 1979. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/sep\/30\/antarctic-winter-sea-ice-falls-to-third-lowest-level-on-record-as-scientists-warn-of-now-problem\">According to The <em>Guardian<\/em><\/a> <strong>,<\/strong> it is about <strong>one million square kilometers below average\u2014an area twice the size of Spain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sea ice follows an annual cycle: in the summer, it falls below 2 million square kilometers; in the winter, it exceeds 17 million. To understand how it\u2019s faring, we compare the September maximums; the four lowest values in the entire satellite record are the most recent four. \u201cA clear indicator of a change in the system,\u201d Ariaan Purich, an Antarctic Ocean expert at Monash University in Melbourne, explained to the British newspaper. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/concerning-low-sea-ice-persists-as-antarctic-hits-third-lowest-winter-peak\">Carbon Brief<\/a><\/em> reports monthly data from Clare Eayrs of the Korea Polar Research Institute: <strong>the five lowest July extent readings are all from 2022 onward, and the four lowest August readings are from 2023 onward<\/strong>. In June, temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula were 20 degrees above normal.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various perspectives on why this is happening, each taking into account the various factors contributing to the climate crisis. Purich points to winds associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimabozza.it\/en\/el-nino-451000-heat-related-deaths-by-february-italy-is-among-the-50-hardest-hit-countries\/\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, the periodic warming of the tropical Pacific. Lettie Roach, of the Alfred Wegener Institute, tells <em>Carbon Brief<\/em> that \u201cseveral years of observations\u201d are needed to determine whether the change is lasting. As for the present, however, Purich is unequivocal:<strong>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a future problem. It\u2019s a current problem<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-cosa-si-perde-quando-il-ghiaccio-manca\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Lost When There Is No Ice<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea ice serves at least three functions. It reflects sunlight, while dark water absorbs it and warms up. It protects ice shelves\u2014floating tongues attached to the coast that slow the advance of inland glaciers: <strong>if waves weaken them, that mass can slide into the sea and cause sea levels to rise by many meters<\/strong>. Finally, it provides a habitat for algae and krill\u2014small crustaceans at the base of the food chain\u2014and serves as a breeding ground for emperor penguins to reproduce and raise their young.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will Hobbs, of the University of Tasmania, notes that since its peak in September, the sea ice has been shrinking \u201cfaster than usual.\u201d Another summer with little snow, he adds, would make the situation \u201cvery concerning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-meno-dati-proprio-ora\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Less Data Right Now<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to track the phenomenon is also diminishing. <strong>In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA<\/a>, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, stopped publishing a dataset on atmospheric pressure that PIOMAS\u2014the system that estimates Arctic sea ice thickness\u2014relies on<\/strong>. Updates have been suspended. The PIOMAS website mentions \u201cconsiderable effort and time\u201d required to find alternative data and is unsure whether funding will be sufficient.
