It also means living without safe drinking water, electricity, or adequate sanitation; being unable to attend school; and lacking access to adequate health care. This is the reality that emerges from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/press-releases\/global-multidimensional-poverty-rises-first-time-2010\">the new report on global multidimensional poverty<\/a>, published on October 12 by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in collaboration with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative at the University of Oxford: <strong>1.2 billion people live in conditions of severe deprivation<\/strong>\u201451.5 million more than in the previous survey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This figure marks a reversal of the trend. Since the index was introduced in 2010, <strong>this is the first time the total number of people living in multidimensional poverty has begun to rise again<\/strong>. The survey covers 108 countries, home to a total of 6.3 billion people: 18.9% of the population surveyed falls into this category.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-piu-di-un-povero-su-due-e-un-bambino\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">More than one in two poor people is a child<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The picture of global inequality highlights, above all, the plight of the youngest among us. <strong>Of the 1.2 billion people affected, 617 million are children<\/strong>\u2014more than half of the total. For them, poverty can mean malnutrition, disruption of their education, inadequate housing, and a lack of basic services\u2014all at the same time\u2014with consequences that are likely to follow them well into adulthood.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another key factor is the geographic distribution of the phenomenon. <strong>Eighty-three percent of people living in multidimensional poverty reside in rural areas<\/strong>, where the distance from schools and health care facilities and the lack of infrastructure make it more difficult to escape from a disadvantaged situation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The index developed by the UNDP and Oxford takes into account ten indicators, grouped into three areas: health, education, and living conditions. It considers not only the number of deprivations a person experiences, but also their severity. In this way, the measurement makes it possible to identify situations that a simple income threshold might not capture.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-il-peso-delle-guerre-e-delle-crisi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Impact of Wars and Crises<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise in poverty is part of an international landscape marked by conflict, instability, and economic hardship. Emergencies can disrupt access to education and healthcare, destroy homes and infrastructure, and undermine livelihoods, making communities with few resources even more vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, however, urges readers to interpret the overall figure carefully. The increase of 51.5 million does not necessarily mean that living conditions have worsened in every country. In fact, part of the change is due to updated demographic estimates: in the 95 countries for which recent surveys were not available, this factor contributed 15.8 million to the increase in the estimated number of people living in poverty. The results thus reflect a combination of demographic trends, as well as national progress and setbacks.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-trentatre-paesi-hanno-dimezzato-la-poverta\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thirty-three countries have cut poverty in half<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The picture is not entirely negative. Among the 89 countries for which comparable time series are available, 33 have managed to cut their multidimensional poverty index in half in less than 15 years.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the examples cited in the report is<strong>Eswatini<\/strong>, a very small country in southern Africa, <strong>where the proportion of the population living in this condition fell from 38.7% to 8% over a 15-year period<\/strong>.<strong> China halved its index value in four years<\/strong>, between 2010 and 2014, <strong>while Vietnam achieved the same result in seven years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These trends, however, can change. <strong>Nigeria, after making progress in the 2010s, saw its situation worsen in the following decade<\/strong>, with an increase in both the percentage and the absolute number of people living in multidimensional poverty.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conclusion is twofold: <strong>poverty reduction does not follow an automatic path, and the results achieved can be reversed<\/strong>. But the experience of dozens of countries shows that interventions capable of simultaneously improving education, health, and material conditions can bring about significant changes. The challenge now is to prevent crises from undoing the progress made and to reach those who continue to live without essential services.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time since 2010, poverty is on the rise again.
