This is demonstrated by the British <a href=\"https:\/\/ukpoms.org.uk\/\">UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme<\/a>, which has been collecting field observations since 2017 through a collaboration between researchers and citizen volunteers. The results, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/oct\/14\/pollinating-insects-flock-plants-weeds\">reported by <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>, show <strong>just how important the blooms of certain wild species are for bees, butterflies, and other insects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Common ivy<\/strong> tops the list, with an average of 22 visits by flying insects every ten minutes of observation. Next is the giant hogweed, with 20 visits, while buddleia, brambles, cornflowers, and thistles average 14. These are plants that are often cut back or removed for aesthetic reasons, but they can provide pollinators with a valuable source of nourishment.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-l-edera-fiorisce-quando-il-cibo-scarseggia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ivy blooms when food is scarce<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of ivy (<em>Hedera helix<\/em>) also depends on when it blooms. In the fall, when many other plants have already completed their life cycle, its flowers continue to provide nectar and pollen. For insects, these resources are important at a time of year when available food sources are dwindling.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jo Milborrow, head of butterfly monitoring for Butterfly Conservation, explained to the British newspaper that ivy is already recommended for its ecological value: it contributes to the reproduction of the holly blue butterfly and provides nectar to species such as the red admiral and the comma butterfly. It is also a native plant that is widespread and relatively easy to grow.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddleia, native to Asia, is also among the most popular species: according to the article, it attracts four times as many butterflies and moths as other highly favored flowers. However, its value to insects must be assessed in the context of the local environment, as it can spread beyond cultivated areas.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-il-declino-dei-sirfidi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Decline of the Syrphidae<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surveys of pollinators also paint a troubling picture. According to a study conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceh.ac.uk\/careers?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23334057283&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA9T_B6vkyJAroVaWYGdHPL0T_ZfSm&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjt6w8ZS-lwMVLpKDBx2UrCOTEAAYASAAEgK48_D_BwE\">the United Kingdom\u2019s Centre for Ecology &amp; Hydrology (UKCEH)<\/a> and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), over the eight-year period under review, syrphid flies, flies often mistaken for bees due to their similar colors but which play an important role in pollination, have declined by about one-third in Great Britain. The decline affects both the abundance of individuals and the total number of recorded species.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This decline coexists with more positive signs for other groups: the same study found an increase in solitary bees and honeybees, as well as beetles and other flies.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the observations come from gardens and areas frequented by people. These spaces may serve as a refuge for some pollinators, but the data do not show that they are sufficient to compensate for the losses in other habitats.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-dieci-minuti-per-contare-gli-insetti\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ten minutes to count the insects<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme also relies on surveys open to the public. Volunteers observe a patch of flowers for ten minutes and record the insects that land on them. When repeated over time, these observations make it possible to compare visits to different plants and track changes in populations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results also offer useful guidance for the management of urban and home gardens: preserving some wildflowers, reducing mowing during the blooming season, and ensuring the presence of flowers throughout different seasons can increase the resources available to pollinators.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eight years of data from the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme show which plants attract the most insects.
