From Seeds to Food: Agriculture and the Environment Come Together for the FAO World Expo

Created to mark the FAO’s 80th anniversary, this event brings to the city a space for reflection, education, and dialogue on the role of food in our lives as a tool for social equity, justice, and peace

How is food produced? Where does it come from, and how is it made? Who grows it? And how does it become what we eat? From October 8 to 12, “From Seeds to Foods” returns to Rome—the universal exhibition organized by the FAO at the Circus Maximus, now in its second edition. Launched last year to mark the FAO’s 80th anniversary and culminating in the opening of the Museum of Food at the FAO headquarters on Via delle Terme di Caracalla, this event brings to the city a space for reflection, education, and dialogue on the role of food in our lives, as a tool for social equity, justice, and peace.

This event focuses on the role of food as a bridge between cultures and as a cornerstone of exchange among peoples, and it places proper, equitable, and healthy nutrition at the heart of the challenges of our time, recognizing it as a fundamental right of all people living on Earth.

Integrated Strategies

“From Seeds to Foods ” brings together institutions and the private sector, featuring numerous exhibitors from around the world and events dedicated to agri-food systems, social agriculture, and their intersection with environmental policies. In particular, an interesting event on this topic is being organized by the Carabinieri Forestali of the CUFAA command, in collaboration with the FAO: the International Conference “Nature, Climate, and Global Stability—Integrated Strategies for Ecosystem Resilience, Climate Mitigation, and Public Health Security.” This event serves as a forum for discussion ahead of the upcoming COP 31 in Antalya.

Biodiversity conservation and agriculture are, in fact, intertwined in the global challenges of achieving a genuine and necessary ecological transition: the international scientific community has long pointed the way toward mitigating the impact of climate change, rising temperatures, and biodiversity loss. The goal is to restore nature, as outlined in the European Nature Restoration Law, by increasing green spaces to make them the backbone of cities as well as of all previously degraded ecosystems. This also serves to protect the soil and the precious resources it provides us.

One Public Health System

Food security, nutrition, and public health—all of which are also linked to the environmental quality of our surroundings—come together in this event open to the city, with a special focus on schools, to convey a simple yet powerful message: the production of fair, equitable, and healthy food—which protects local production networks and does not exploit the planet’s resources in a distorted way—means health and well-being for people and for the environment as a whole. One Health, a single collective health.
