Italy Recognizes 453 New Wild Plants

Twenty years of research have updated our understanding of national plant biodiversity: nearly all of the newly recorded species are endemic

Italy continues to update its map of plant biodiversity. Over the past twenty years, 453 new species and subspecies of wild plants have been described, 443 of which are endemic—that is, found exclusively in Italy. This data comes from a study published in the journal *Plant Biosystems*, which provides the most comprehensive overview of the evolution of knowledge regarding Italian flora between 2005 and 2025. The result is a snapshot that goes beyond a simple tally of new species: it measures our current understanding of Italian flora and highlights the areas where research still has a long way to go.

A Better Understanding of Biodiversity

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed 3,902 scientific publications on Italian vascular flora, tracing the progression of knowledge region by region. Three-quarters of the studies focus on specific areas, while just 2.4% cover the entire country—a finding that, according to the authors, highlights the need to strengthen collaboration among research groups in order to obtain a more comprehensive view of Italy’s botanical heritage.

Among the regions that recorded the highest number of new taxa are Abruzzo, with 74 species and subspecies, Sicily (69), Tuscany ( 53), and Sardinia (51). The study notes, however, that many of these new entries do not result from the discovery of previously unobserved plants, but rather from the taxonomic revision of already known species, which were subsequently recognized as distinct entities thanks to advances in scientific knowledge.

A Two-Speed Italy

While the number of new species is striking, it is the distribution of knowledge that represents one of the most interesting aspects of the work. Emilia-Romagna, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Lombardy, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia are the regions that have made the most progress in floristic documentation, thanks to monitoring programs, mapping projects, and systematic data collection efforts developed over the past twenty years. In Emilia-Romagna alone, a mapping project is underway that has collected over 200,000 botanical records, most of which were obtained directly in the field.

The situation is different in Southern Italy. The study highlights that large parts of Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, and Sicily still exhibit limited or general knowledge of the flora, despite the numerous research campaigns conducted in recent years. According to the authors, this gap primarily reflects differences in investment and the continuity of scientific activities dedicated to the flora.

A foundation for protecting habitats

Finally, the study highlights an often-overlooked aspect. Flora research provides the scientific foundation needed to monitor habitats, fulfill the obligations set forth in the Habitats Directive, and plan effective conservation measures. Without up-to-date knowledge of species distribution, the authors note, even biodiversity conservation strategies risk being based on incomplete information. For this reason, the study highlights the need to invest more in basic research and field surveys, which are essential for building an increasingly accurate picture of Italy’s plant heritage.
